Product Designer

In his role at i4, Ben’s role focuses on the design and development of products from the early conceptual stage all the way through to production level. Ben has strong experience in plastics design and development of products through all stages of the design process. Ben’s career after graduating from Brunel University began working for Dyson in their R&D department after which he moved to Australia to work for a large American multinational. After leaving Australia he traveled for several months before settling in Scotland and joining i4.

What is your approach to design?
I try to look at the proposed problem from multiple different perspectives. This enables me to see the bigger picture of what is required and what the potential product can do rather than just what is the first thought which comes to mind. Once I have several ideas, I will sketch them up then start to realise them in CAD. I find that looking at other products which aren't necessarily related can be a real benefit as sometimes you stumble on an idea while looking at something completely different.

What are your three favourite designed products?
Kindle - It's kept me sane on several 9+ hour bus journeys while traveling around Asia and allows me to be able to access a significantly larger library of books than I could physically carry at any one time.
Black Diamond ATC Pro - My belay device of choice when I'm climbing. It's a very simple design, formed from one piece of forged metal but provides multiple modes of use all in a small package.
Vassily Chair - I love the simplistic design of this chair, using just bent metal tube and leather strapping to form a comfortable and stylish item which, in my opinion, is timeless.

What interests you?
I really enjoy climbing and being outdoors. The mental challenge of climbing provides me with a puzzle to solve and accompanied with the physical effort keeps me fit and healthy.
I also enjoy mountaineering and have climbed several peaks in the alps including the Monch, Jungfrau and Matterhorn.

What product could you not live without?
My climbing shoes
